What ELI5 means
ELI5 means “explain like I’m five.”
It is shorthand for asking someone to explain an idea in plain language, with less jargon and more patience. It does not mean the person asking is five. It means they want the simple version first, before all the caveats, acronyms, and expert details show up.
Good ELI5 explanations usually do a few things.
- Start with the basic idea.
- Use familiar examples.
- Avoid unnecessary technical words.
- Add detail only after the core idea makes sense.
For example, instead of saying “a database is a structured persistence layer for querying records,” an ELI5 version might say:
A database is like a very organized notebook for a computer. It helps the computer save information and find it again later.
The goal is not to be childish. The goal is to make the first explanation easy to hold in your head.
